En Vogue is an influential R&B and pop vocal group from Oakland, California, celebrated for powerhouse lead vocals, intricate harmonies, sophisticated style, and a sound that blends soul, new jack swing, hip-hop, funk, and rock. Originally formed by producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy with Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, and Dawn Robinson, the group broke through with the 1990 album Born to Sing and the hit “Hold On.” Their landmark 1992 album Funky Divas produced “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It),” “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” and the rock-driven “Free Your Mind,” while later hits include “Don’t Let Go (Love)” and the Salt-N-Pepa collaboration “Whatta Man.” En Vogue earned seven Grammy nominations and multiple MTV Video Music Awards, American Music Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards while helping establish the vocal-group template followed by many subsequent R&B and pop acts.
