Gary Numan is an English singer, songwriter, musician and producer whose pioneering use of synthesizers helped shape synth-pop, new wave and electronic music before his later work moved into darker industrial and alternative rock. Born Gary Anthony James Webb, he first gained prominence as frontman of Tubeway Army with the 1979 album Replicas and the No. 1 UK single “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” before launching his solo career with The Pleasure Principle and the international hit “Cars.” Albums including Telekon, I, Assassin, Sacrifice, Pure, Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind), Savage (Songs from a Broken World) and Intruder document a career that has continually shifted between electronic, gothic and industrial sounds. His distinctive synthesizer work, futuristic imagery and darker later-period music have influenced generations of electronic and industrial artists.
