Mabel Mercer was an English-born cabaret singer and song interpreter recognized as one of the defining voices of 20th-century cabaret. Known for exquisite phrasing, clear diction, emotional subtlety, and intimate storytelling, she performed in Paris, New York, Britain, and across Europe, with landmark appearances at Chez Bricktop, Le Ruban Bleu, Tony’s, the Carlyle, the St. Regis Hotel, and her own Byline Club. Her influence reached artists including Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, and Nat King Cole, and she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983.
