Mark Farner is an American rock singer, songwriter, guitarist, and founding member of Grand Funk Railroad, the Flint, Michigan band that became one of the defining American hard-rock acts of the 1970s. As the group’s original lead singer and lead guitarist, Farner wrote and sang many of its signature songs, including “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “Heartbreaker,” “Footstompin’ Music,” “Mean Mistreater,” and “Bad Time.” After his original run with Grand Funk, he developed a solo career spanning hard rock, blues-rock, and contemporary Christian music, with albums including Mark Farner, No Frills, Just Another Injustice, Wake Up, and Some Kind of Wonderful. His 2024 album Closer To My Home revisited his classic-rock roots with new material and a re-recording of “I’m Your Captain,” while his current performances are presented under the Mark Farner’s American Band name.
