Metallica is an American heavy metal band formed in 1981 by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, with guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo completing the current lineup. One of the defining bands of thrash metal, Metallica helped push the genre from the underground into the global mainstream through landmark albums including Kill ’Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, and the blockbuster 1991 self-titled album commonly known as The Black Album. Their catalog includes enduring songs such as “Enter Sandman,” “Master of Puppets,” “One,” “Nothing Else Matters,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and “The Unforgiven.” Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 and winner of multiple Grammy Awards, Metallica remains one of the most commercially successful and influential heavy bands in history. Their most recent studio album is 72 Seasons, released in 2023, while the band continues major-scale touring and is scheduled for a run of Las Vegas performances at Sphere in October 2026.
