RX Bandits emerged from Orange County's ska-punk scene in the mid-'90s as a band unafraid to evolve. Led by Matt Embree's ambitious songwriting, they quickly built a reputation for taking musical risks and infusing their work with lyrical substance. What started as a five-piece ska outfit morphed into something far more complex and progressive—eventually expanding to six members and gradually shedding the ska elements in favor of moodier, more experimental sounds.
Formed in 1995 as Pharmaceutical Bandits, the group released their debut in 1997 before rebranding as RX Bandits a year later. They toured alongside Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish, and New Found Glory, and made appearances at Warped Tour while building a loyal following through club dates. By the early 2000s, the band's lineup had shifted dramatically, and with albums like Progression and Resignation, they'd moved into heavier, more introspective territory—blending reggae, post-hardcore, and Embree's increasingly political songwriting. After releasing Mandala in 2009 and announcing a hiatus in 2011, they reconvened for a cover EP and eventually returned in 2014 as a four-piece to record Gemini, Her Majesty, proving their appetite for reinvention remained intact.
