Soul Asylum is an American alternative-rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1981 and led by singer-songwriter Dave Pirner. Emerging from the city’s punk and post-punk scene, the group developed a melodic, guitar-driven sound that blends punk energy, roots rock and emotionally direct songwriting. Its breakthrough album, Grave Dancers Union, produced the Grammy-winning “Runaway Train” along with “Somebody to Shove” and “Black Gold,” followed by enduring songs such as “Misery,” “Just Like Anyone,” “Promises Broken” and “Can’t Even Tell.” The band continues recording and touring, with recent albums including Hurry Up and Wait and Slowly But Shirley.
