Underoath is an American post-hardcore and metalcore band known for combining aggressive guitars, screamed and clean vocals, atmospheric electronics and emotionally charged songwriting. Formed in Florida in 1997, the band achieved a major breakthrough with the 2004 album They’re Only Chasing Safety, featuring staples such as “A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White,” “Reinventing Your Exit” and “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door.” Its heavier follow-up, Define the Great Line, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and produced “Writing on the Walls,” while later albums including Lost in the Sound of Separation, Ø (Disambiguation), Erase Me, Voyeurist and The Place After This One continued to push the group between metalcore, post-hardcore, alternative rock and electronic experimentation. Underoath has earned multiple gold records and three Grammy Award nominations and remains one of the most influential bands to emerge from the 2000s post-hardcore scene.
